Lipstick Shades for Every Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades for Every Skin Tone

Finding the right shade of lipstick can be difficult. We like to stick to a safe lipstick, but we end up wearing it everywhere – to the movies, work, or a dinner party. Well, this is the case with most at least. But if you’re willing to explore something out of your comfort zone, then take a look at our list of lipsticks for every skin tone.

1. Fair to light skin tone
If you have a light skin tone, then you can try hues of peach, pink, beige, and nude. Cool shades work well for this skin type. There are many other hues you can try, but the trick is to correspond the undertone of the skin with that of the lipstick. A few products to try out are the Rouge Dior (in 100 Nude Look matte finish) from Dior, the Color Statement Matte Lipstick (in Matte Innocence) from Milani, and the Rouge Interdit (in Secret Nude) from Givenchy.

2. Light to medium skin tone
Women with this skin tone look great with neutral tones of pink, nude, brick, and the like. The idea is to pick undertones of lipstick that don’t make the face look pale. Opt out of bright colors or deep tones, but play the mid ground with neutral shades. Some beautiful shades that fit the bill here include the Matte Revolution Lipstick (in Pillow Talk Original) from Charlotte Tilbury, the Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick (in Loyalist) from Maybelline, the Natural Nudes Lipstick (in Skinny Dippin’) from Too Faced, and the Luxe Lip Color (in Almost Bare) from Bobbi Brown.

3. Olive skin tone
If you have an olive skin tone, then you must try warm shades. Warm shades of pink or peach are perfect for casual occasions and you can even try deep reds, corals, and maroons for an evening out—they look fantastic with the right highlighter. Some shades to try for this skin tone include the Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick (in Classic Beige) from Sephora, the Matte Lipstick (in Mehr) from MAC, and the color splash lipstick (in colada) from tarte.

4. Dark skin tone
Purple, plum, brown, and red hues work the best with dark skin tones. They give the skin a good contrast and elevate the overall features of the face. Some lipsticks with deeper tones include the Semi-Matte Lipstick (in Dark Knight) from mented, the Cindy Matte Lipstick from Lime Crime, and the MatteTrance Lipstick (in Elson) from Pat McGrath Labs.

Note that the shade of a lipstick can influence the shape of your lips. For instance, if you have thin lips, then you should steer clear of deep shades, as they can make your lips look thinner. Light lipstick shades, on the other hand, make the lips look fuller.
