Autonomous Vehicle Brands Leading the Way in 2021

The idea behind self-driving or autonomous cars is to have the car navigate streets by itself, or at least with little need for driver interaction. These cars use an array of sensors, GPS, and communication systems in order to navigate roads and traffic. Currently, manufacturers are developing various levels of automation with the end goal of allowing the driver to sit back, relax, and let the car do the driving.

Car manufacturers are vying for a spot on this new trend of autonomous vehicles, here are five brands paving the way in this new technology field:

1. Volvo

The Swedish car manufacturer is known for building solid vehicles with an emphasis on safety. They are also one of the largest heavy-duty truck manufacturers in the world. Vovlo is actively developing autonomous technology for use in future vehicles. In 2018 they introduced the 360c concept car that delved into the possibilities of future travel. The 360c concept envisions a vehicle that allows you to have a meeting, eat lunch or even sleep while you travel. This concept car is the epitome of traveling while letting the car do all the driving.

2. Voyage

Voyage has a unique concept in the autonomous vehicle sector, retirement communities. Using a robotaxi powered by an AI called Commander, the key concept is safety. The taxi is limited to 25mph giving the AI plenty of time to make driving decisions at slower speeds. The company is working on not only real-time driving modules but using AI to make predictions on how other drivers might behave. This will allow the vehicle to navigate traffic effectively.

3. Tesla

Probably one of the most recognizable names on this list is Tesla, which is run by the enigmatic Elon Musk. The electric car manufacturer currently offers five electric car models; sedans – Model S, Model 3, and SUVs – Model X and Model Y. These cars aren’t completely autonomous but do have Autopilot, which offers a variety of driver assistance technology and will serve as a precursor to fully automated driving.

4. Waymo

Waymo might not be instantly recognizable, but its parent company is sure to be. It is a subsidiary of Alphabet, which is of course run by Google. The company started out in 2009 as a self-driving car experiment by Google. After over 10 million miles, the team has developed a self-driving car, truck, and ride service. The team doesn’t build cars, but rather develops the technology, applications, and hardware to drive a car autonomously.

5. Pony.ai

Pony.ai is another company that doesn’t make cars, but rather is working on the technology and hardware for autonomous vehicles. The company utilizes sensors, mapping, and a deep learning model that allows the vehicle to use real-time data to make changes quickly. Toyota is planning on investing $400 million into the company for further development of its product line.

All of these companies have slightly different approaches and ideas to get to one singular solution. The idea is to have a vehicle that will work in the real world and keep passengers safe no matter what the conditions might be.
