Air pollution is the mixture of harmful substances released into the air. These pollutants can be detrimental to the health of humans living in that area, especially if they suffer from breathing related issues (i.e., asthma, COPD, allergies, etc.). Most of the air pollution comes with the production and the use of energy. These pollution levels can vary from state to state and can depend on multiple factors. This article lists the areas with poor air quality and high levels of pollution in the country.

1. Bakersfield, CA
When it comes to air pollution in the US, Bakersfield has one of the highest pollution levels. This, of course, stands out as Bakersfield is mainly a farming city. The place actually collects tons of soot and ozone, which can turn into smog during warm summer days. Apart from this, it is also the oil capital of California, which causes high levels of emission that contribute to the total air pollution of the city.

2. Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton
The geography of a location can also play a role when it comes to air pollution. While the emissions are mostly human-made in the Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton area, the river valley that is doused in strong winds tends to trap the emissions leading to an increase in pollution levels. Not to mention, Pittsburgh and the neighboring areas are filled with valley rivers which allow for easy transmission of pollutants. What also contributes to the pollution are emissions from vehicles.

3. Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA
The state of California has one of the highest levels of pollution. Los Angeles that lies here contributes to this name. In fact, LA is known for its thick layers of smog that cover the city. What contributes to this is the high numbers of owned cars releasing high amounts of toxic elements. This is also worsened by the natural pollution trap caused by the mountains in the area.

4. Houston, TX
Texas is one of the most polluted states in the country. What contributes to the high levels of air pollution is the population of the state. Not to mention, Houston is home to two major airports. The pollution in this state is majorly contributed to the large industries and manufacturing areas.

5. Lancaster, PA
Lancaster, which is a part of the state of Pennsylvania, has very poor air quality. This is caused by a combination of both pollutions as well as geographical aspects. Pennsylvania is also home to the coal industry and constantly struggles with both ozone and particle pollutants. Aside from Lancaster, there are approximately four other cities in the state considered highly polluted. To tackle this, PA has started to shift to natural gases over coal. This has helped see a decline in particle pollution in the state.
